Caracas has a bad reputation as a very dangerous city. I spent two days
here when other travel plans went awry. I walked for miles across the city
(in the daytime, of course) and took the subway on several occasions and had
no hint of a problem. I will say, though, that on one occasion a nice lady
traveling on the subway with her teenage daughter warned me very vigorously
about wearing my cell phone on my belt. So apparently, the locals consider
the city a dangerous place too. In fact, at the airport, people at the
information booth suggested that when I get off the bus I planned to take
downtown, that I get a taxi to go the block or two to my hotel because it
would be dangerous to walk. I didn't take this advice and despite carrying
a large backpack that marked me as an obvious tourist, I did not have any
problems or feel in any danger.
In fact, I found the city to be one of the nicer cities I visited in Venezuela
despite the fact that I typically do not like large sprawling cities. But
Caracas had a very nice Plaza Bolivar, a couple of nice city parks, and a
very efficient and inexpensive subway system that made moving through the city
quite easy.
I hope you enjoy my photos of Caracas.
