Merida is a fairly modern city and home to one of Venezuela's
largest universities - the Universidad de Los Andes. Consequently, it's a
city of many young and well educated people. It's also a safe city, both
day and night. Having said this, there really isn't a lot within the city
that is of particular interest. What Merida has going for it is its nice
setting in the Andes Mountains. From anywhere within the city you're only
a few minutes by car from beautiful mountain scenery. Merida is also home
to the world's tallest/longest cable car ride, stretching from Merida at
roughly 5,000 feet elevation to over 14,000 feet high in the Andes.
A nice posada in Merida is the Encanto Andino on Calle 24 near
the corner with Avenida 27. The posada is squeaky clean and run by a very
hospitable Venezuelan woman. The room has a fan, TV, and hot water in the
shower. And best of all, it's very quiet - a real luxury in a country
where blaring latino music is the norm.
I hope you enjoy my photos of Merida, Venezuela.
