Santa Elena, Venezuela

Photos taken in and around Santa Elena, Venezuela

Santa Elena is in the far southeast corner of Venezuela near the Brazilian border. The town itself doesn't have much to offer. What brings most people to Santa Elena, Venezuela is Roraima Tepui. Beyond that, within a couple hours drive there are some interesting waterfalls and the opportunity to see the Gran Sabana, but there really isn't much else.

I hope you enjoy my photos of Santa Elena, Venezuela.

This is the Hotel Augustus in Santa Elena. It's not a bad hotel - fairly comfortable, but like many places in South America - and this is especially true of Venezuela - it is surrounded by other establishments that like to play latin music extremely loudly. The Posada Michelle is equally clean, but doesn't have a TV, and is a quieter place to stay.

This is the Yuruani Falls. They're about 90 meters across and about 8 meters tall. Pretty impressive power and the roar of the water attests to that. The coloration is slightly brown from the tanin of decomposing vegetation.

This is Jaspe Falls, within an hour's drive of Santa Elena, Venezuela. The falls is named for the brilliantly red Jasper stone clearly visible under the flow of the river. In November, when I was there, the rainy season was coming to an end and the flow of water over the falls was down, so they weren't so impressive. But the color of the stone was worth seeing on its own.
